Millions of people around the world are trying to eat better, get fit, and live a long life. Many are discovering the great benefits found in eating foods high in antioxidants. Understanding what these substances are can really help keep you from eating bad foods, and keep you eating well throughout your years.
Antioxidants are substances found in foods that can prevent the oxidative damage to the body. When the body cells use oxygen they produce what are known as free radicals and can cause damage. Some of the benefits of stopping free radicals can include, reducing the risk of heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer, and so much more. Getting foods that are rich in these substances isn’t too hard.
When looking for foods that are high in antioxidants, consider eating some of the following foods on a regular basis: legumes, berries, artichoke, nuts and grains, plums, kale, spinach, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli flowers, beets, red bell pepper, eggplant, grapefruit, cherries, kiwi fruit, prunes, raisins, and Brussels sprouts.
There is a rating scale that the USDA has created to measure the amount of antioxidants in foods, and it has been recommended that 3,000 ORAC Units (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity Units) are eaten a day. Two of the highest antioxidant rich foods and the ORAC units per 100 grams include Prunes (5570) and Raisins (2830). It should be noted that eating better doesn’t need to be complicated, nor does it need to omit these great foods. Consider eating a balanced diet with plenty of antioxidant rich foods, and you’ll be able to promote longevity in life, free of disease and enjoy the great tasting natural foods that nature has provided.
